The WiFi Debate

After reading an article in a little Thai brochure about backpackers using WiFi on their travels it got me thinking about my opinion on the matter. Is it wrong to constantly connect to the WiFi when leaving the rest of your world behind and starting your adventure? In some cases I would just love to switch off my phone, never connect to the WiFi and leave all electronic devices behind. On a week long holiday, yes. I love to just switch off from all of that, have no phone buzzing in my ear and just enjoy a week of blissful peace and quiet. And I start thinking is it wrong to connect to WiFi every single evening, upload pictures and write a blog? I should be enjoying my adventure and leaving all that behind, right? But then I think again. This isn't just a week long holiday, where I can just flick a switch on my life back home. There is more to it than that. The people back home are counting on me to keep them updated with what I'm doing so they know I'm alive, well and above all, happy. I have toyed with the idea that maybe people think it's a bit silly to be on your phone when you're meant to be enjoying yourself. But I AM enjoying myself so much.. I just know the loved ones in my life need my interaction with them, so it's not as hard for them that I'm away for such a long period of time. And ultimately it's lovely to keep in touch with people back home, not just for their sake but for mine too. I know it can be annoying to see constant updates on Facebook of my travels, but I know that the people that really care are the ones that do want to see all of it. I've decided to not feel guilty about being on my phone or connecting to the internet as it's a modern world we live in now and our latest technology does make it so much easier to keep in touch with your friends and family back home. It doesn't mean I'm not enjoying myself.. FAR from it. I'm having the time of my life and I just want to share that with everyone at home.
